Frequently Asked Questions
  • How do the recent (2004-2005) changes to the Business Core impact the IS/Business minor concentration for those students who declared their major prior ro 2004-2005?

    Preface

The College of Business has made a number of changes to the business minor that have in turn impacted the IS majors who have chosen the Business Minor concentration. Those students who are new to the degree program can simply use the new Business Minor requirements listed in the catalog. The requirements can be found in both the Business and Information Science sections of the catalog.

Students who previously declared their major to be IS with a Business Minor concentration prior to the changes in the Business Minor may find that the courses required in their relevant catalog do not exist at this time. This information is provided in an attempt to define solutions for those students.

    Dilemma:

In Fall 2004, the College of Business made changes to the definition of the Business Minor. In addition to changing the list of courses that constitute the minor, some of the courses in the old definition of the minor are in the process of being eliminated.

There seem to be three general categories to consider:

    1. Those students declaring the IS/Business major prior to the changes and who have already completed the old requirements: this scenario requires no special attention as the old requirements (those in effect at the time of declaration of your major) still apply.
    2. Those students declaring the IS/Business major prior to the changes and who have not completed any of the requirements of either the old or the new business curriculum: theoretically, you could choose to use either the old or the new requirements, but the practicality of completing the old requirements is difficult as the old courses are disappearing.
    3. Those students declaring the IS/Business major prior to the changes and who have completed some of the requirements of the old business curriculum, but not all of the old requirements: once again, you could choose either set of requirements as your starting point, but each requirement which could not currently be taken because it no longer exists would be replaced on a course by course basis. Below is a list of courses which are interchangeable:
      Old New
      BUSN 301 BUSN 201
      BUSN 361 BUSN 350
      BUSN 400 BUSN 300
      BUSN 498 MGMT 440
As mentioned previously, other courses would be substituted on a course-by-course basis.

In addition, be aware that the requirement for "one additional non-core business course" requires that you apply the core list at the time of the declaration of your major. For example, in 2002-2003, BUSN 408 was a core course but in 2004-2005 it is no longer core and can be counted as non-core.

Note that Summer 2005 is likely the LAST chance to take some of the older BUSN classes like BUSN 361.
