Course Description: The study of various topics from algebra, functions, number theory, geometry, probability, and statistics. The course emphasizes the connections and interplay among these topics and their applications so that the student can use and value the connections among mathematics topics and other disciplines. (Taken from 2001-2002 Graduate Catalog).
Textbooks: COMAP (2003). For all practice purposes: Introduction to contemporary mathematics (6th ed.). New York: W.H. Freeman.
Calculator: a scientific calculator is recommended, but a graphing calculator is fine. You can use calculators on tests and the final examination.

Homework: Homework will assigned at almost every class meeting and will be due the following Tuesday at the beginning of class. Make-up tests are given at the discretion of the instructor, but must be requested prior to the scheduled test time. I encourage you to work together on homework and will accept assignments from groups of students.
Course Objectives: Students will
- Learn how mathematics is used in real life,
- Learn how the mathematics they teach is relaed to the mathematics used in real life,
- Develop a deeper understanding of the mathematics they teach,
- Develop more confidence in their ability to do and understand mathematics, and
- Determine ways to use at least one concept from the class to do as an activity with their students.
