I. Course Description: This course covers topics from mathematics corse not required for licensure, but now part of the elementary mathematics curriculum. The topics include statistics, probability, geomery, patterns, and functions. The course will provide an in depth study of concepts within the topics and effective methods for teaching the concepts to elementary students.

II. Learner Objectives: By the end of the course, students will:

1. Have a deeper understanding of topics covered.

2. Understand the importance of teaching these topics to elementary students.

3. Have developed effective methods for teaching the topics to elementary students.

III. Textbook: O'Daffer, P., Charles, R., Cooney, T., Dossey, J., & Schielack, J. (2001). Mathematics for Elementary School Teachers (2nd ed.). Boston, MA: Addison-Wesley.

IV. Course Requirements:

A.  2 Examinations (7/18 & 7/31)              30% each

B. Final Examination (8/8)                         30%

C.  Homework                                            10%

V. Grade Scale:

100 - 94            A

79 - 77            C+

93 -  90             A-

76 - 73            C

89 - 87              B+

72 - 70            C-

86 - 83              B

Below 70         Not passing

82 - 80              B-

VI. Homework: I will assign homework at the end of class and then post the assignment on my web page. When grades are determined at the end of the semester, 90% of the total points possible are used to determine the homework average. Groups of 2-3 teachers can do their homework together and submit one copy with every group member's name on that copy. I expect every group member to provide input into the homework submitted by the group.
