I took these pictures at Clarkson University about ten years ago. We had a very large capacitor so we could store a very large charge. When visitors would come for open house, we would discharge the capacitor through a very fine wire (about the diameter of a human hair). The wire would explode with a very loud and even frightening bang. What is causing this? Can you come up with a theory to explain this phenomenon?
